Big 5
Ford Motor Inc of U.S.A, has a concept called BIG 5.
This is a very simple concept where you define 5 activities that you need to focus on a daily basis.
Everyday, when you get in to office, instead of marking your attendence or reading an article or talking to a colleague/client or checking your mails etc, first write down what are your BIG 5's for today.
If you have a standard BIG 5, that doesn't change day to day, just read each one those once and plan how you will implement them during the course of the day. Anything you decide to do other than or before implementing your BIG 5's is a waste of a proffessionals productive time.
Consider this....what if you get paid on an hourly basis, & only for doing those activities that are part of your BIG 5 for the day.
